I decided to focus on the contributions of veterinary technicians to the animal clinics because of the impact that they have on the flow they bring about inside of the hospitals. Their actions allow quality animal care while also increasing productivity. They must act fast and make no mistakes for animal lives are put into the hospital's hands. If I continue to pursue my dream and become a veterinarian one day I will be working very closely with veterinary technicians every day in the office. The veterinarian technician is an important aspect of the clinic. Knowing their roles will help me in the future to use their presence efficiently and allowing us to get tasks done more quickly. The doctor is very busy and does not have time to set up surgery or clean up utensils by themselves. Everyday that I step into my mentor-ship I observe how veterinary technicians do lots of the admitting and recovery of patients. My mentor is often times performing surgeries, dental, and diagnosing other patients. With the help of her technicians the job is much easier for her and they are able to work as a team to quickly administer patients. Before my mentor-ship especially I knew very little as to what a veterinary technician did in the clinic. After some research and through what I have seen I now know that they do much of the preparation and handling with animals in the facility. During that time the doctors are doing actual animal examinations and diagnosing their injury/disease. I do not think that much of the public actually knows about the different roles that everyone plays in the animal clinic especially veterinary technicians. I searched many resources to which I can look into for receiving information on the responsibilities to which veterinarian technicians are held accountable. For a better understanding of the public's perspective on the career target I set up a google docs survey and posted it into my Facebook to receive their ideas. I received so far 15 responses. I also have a small book I purchased from books-a-million titled “ The Pill Book To Medication For Your Dog And Cat” that gives me concrete procedures that veterinary technicians do everyday on the job like pilling, handling, and taking vitals of animals. My interview with an actual veterinary technician from South Hall Vet also gives me better information to help develop my model. Through the different sources I managed to learn more of the procedure. I will explain to others the contribution a technician gives to a clinic. I have learned lots of things from the sources that I have gathered so far. For instance, when I conducted my interview with the veterinary technician I asked if she believed that any average person knows what responsibilities her profession holds. She claimed that with her interactions with clients that she thinks that they do have knowledge. However, I conducted a google docs survey and there are many individuals with the wrong perception of what responsibilities veterinary technicians hold. I also learned more of the things that technicians are required to do through extensive reading. This will be good knowledge to reference back to for a veterinarian to choose a competent and reliable veterinarian technician to work with.
